Happy Mother's Day Flowers — What to Send, by the Mom She Is

Happy Mother's Day Flowers — What to Send, by the Mom She Is

  • "Happy Mother's Day flowers" isn't one arrangement — the right one depends on the kind of mom you're sending them to.
  • Classic moms want peonies and garden roses in pink and ivory.
  • Garden-lovers want ranunculus, sweet pea, and cherry blossom — something that looks grown, not manufactured.
  • Moms who keep plants alive want an orchid, not a bouquet.
  • Bottom line: The flowers should feel like her — not like a Mother's Day display case.

What "Happy Mother's Day" Actually Means to Say

Every Mother's Day, the most common question we get at our studio in Larchmont is some version of this: What's the best Happy Mother's Day flower? And every year, my honest answer is the same. There isn't one. Not really. Because the flowers that make a mother feel seen aren't the flowers that show up most often — they're the flowers that feel like her.

Generic doesn't land. A mixed bouquet that could have gone to anyone rarely does the thing you actually want your Mother's Day flowers to do. So instead of giving you a list of "the ten best Mother's Day flowers," let me give you something more useful. Here's how we think about Happy Mother's Day flowers at The Flower Bar — by the kind of mom she is.

For the Mom Who Loves the Classics

Some moms are quietly loyal to what they already love. Peonies, garden roses, a soft pink palette. Nothing too wild, nothing they haven't seen before. If that's her, don't overthink it.

The right arrangement here is full and generous — peonies sourced at peak from our farms in North Carolina, garden roses with all those petals, maybe a few ranunculus for movement. Our Sweet Blush palette (pinks and ivories) was designed for exactly this mom. The meaning matters too: pink says gratitude, peonies say honor. She'll read both, even if she doesn't know she is.

Browse our Mother's Day collection to see the palettes we've built for this year.

For the Mom Who Reads Garden Magazines

If she has a favorite rose breeder, or she mentions when the hellebore is out in her yard, or she's the one who taught you the difference between a peony and a garden rose — she's not going to love a tight, uniform bouquet. She wants something that looks like it was just picked.

For her, we design loose and seasonal. Garden roses, ranunculus, sweet pea from Japan (the best — longer stems, more blooms), a few stems of cherry blossom branch, and hellebore from our local farm partner in Chappaqua whenever we can get them. Imperfect and a little wild. It should look less like a florist arrangement and more like what she'd cut from her own garden if it weren't too early in the season.

Our Lavender Mist palette (soft purples and mauves) tends to resonate with this mom — it feels more garden than gifted.

For the Mom Who Keeps Everything Alive

Some moms take one look at a cut-flower arrangement and — even as they're thanking you — are already thinking about how sad it'll be when it wilts. For her, cut flowers are the wrong medium. Send a plant instead.

This Mother's Day, we're offering phalaenopsis orchid plants in Mother's Day colors: one, two, three, or five stems, as well as mini orchids. They last for months. They often rebloom. They need almost nothing — a few ice cubes a week. For a mom who values lasting over lavish, an orchid says more than a big bouquet ever could.

For the Mom Who's Also a Grandmother

A mom who's also a grandma is celebrating two versions of herself on Mother's Day. The mother who raised you, and the grandmother who now gets to love your kids too. That deserves an arrangement with presence.

We tend to design larger and a touch more expressive here — a full mixed arrangement in our Coral Bloom palette (warm peaches and corals). If there are grandkids involved, a handwritten note from them (we can include one with any arrangement) lands harder than any flower. It's the combination of the generous arrangement and the small, specific voice of a child that makes this one unforgettable.

For the Mom Far Away

If Mom lives outside our delivery area — we hand-deliver across Westchester County, Fairfield County, and NYC — we can still help. We regularly help our Larchmont clients send flowers to out-of-state moms through our trusted florist network.

For out-of-state arrangements, we recommend designer's choice - let them choose the best available for a beautiful bouquet (the flowers are not traveling anymore than they would if they were in our delivery area)— garden roses and orchids travel better than peonies or sweet pea. And we coordinate with the receiving florist to make sure the design is right before it goes to her. If you want to set this up, call us — it's easier on the phone, and we'll walk you through everything. They don't need to call us - they can do it online without any difficulty.

For the Mom You're Still Figuring Out

Maybe it's a new stepmother. A mother-in-law you're still getting to know. A mom you love deeply but haven't quite cracked the code of. You don't know her favorite flower. You don't know if she likes pink or peach. You're guessing.

When you're guessing — don't. Tell us the occasion and we'll design something in the safest, warmest colors we know: soft pinks, ivories, a little peach, plenty of green. Our Sweet Blush palette exists partly for this exact situation. And if you want to talk it through, call us — that's what we're here for.

How to Make It Feel Personal

The flowers are only part of the gift. What makes Happy Mother's Day flowers land — what makes her remember this year, not just that you sent something — is everything around the flowers.

  • The card — One specific line does more than five generic ones. Not "Happy Mother's Day, love you." Try "Thanks for still calling me when you see a blue heron. Every time." We include a handwritten note on a Mother's Day greeting card with every arrangement no we don't they can buy a Mother's Day greeting card and we will handwrite their message.
  • The add-ons — A box of Jacques Torres chocolates, or a "Best Mom Ever" scented candle, can be added when you order. Both elevate the moment without crowding the flowers.
  • The color — If she's worn the same shade of rose for forty years, that's the color of the arrangement. We'll match it. No we won't - that would be a nightmare.
  • The timing — Arriving Saturday morning, not Sunday afternoon, gives her a day to enjoy them before the holiday. If she's quiet on Mother's Day, an early-week surprise — the Wednesday before — says even more. Don't say Saturday morning. We are pushing Friday delivery. Saturday deliveries will arrive by the end of the day.

When to Order

Mother's Day 2026 is Sunday, May 10. For guaranteed delivery with the flowers you want — especially peonies — order by Thursday, May 7. Friday at the latest. Same-day delivery across Westchester, Fairfield County, and NYC is available when you order by 3 PM Monday through Saturday. See our shipping and delivery page for details. Don't use word shipping - we don't ship. I do not want to emphasize same day delivery for Mother's Day. It is entirely possible we will have to stop taking orders/turn off the phones/pause online orders. That's why they need to order in advance. Hasn't happened in 2 years, but it can.

Frequently Asked Questions

What flowers say "Happy Mother's Day"?

The flowers most associated with Mother's Day today are peonies (most moms' favorite), garden roses, ranunculus, tulips, sweet pea, and cherry blossom branches. The flowers that say "Happy Mother's Day" to your mom are the ones that feel like her — which is why we design around who she is, not what's trending.

What's the best flower to give Mom?

There's no universal best. If she loves the classics, peonies and garden roses in our Sweet Blush palette. If she's a gardener, ranunculus and sweet pea with cherry blossom branches. If she keeps plants alive, an orchid. If you're not sure, tell us the occasion, and we'll design something warm and considered.

Is a bouquet or a plant better for Mother's Day?

Depends on her. Bouquets are expressive, meant to be enjoyed in the moment. Plants — especially orchids — last months and are more meaningful to a mom who doesn't love watching cut flowers wilt. A mom who talks about "her" plants probably wants an orchid. A mom who lights up around a full arrangement wants a bouquet.

Can I add peonies to any arrangement?

Yes — you can add peonies to any order. If you've found an arrangement you love but want more peony in it, you can add peonies online or tell us when you order and we'll build it in. We also offer all-peony designs in a vase or hand-tied bouquet, in several sizes.

When should I order Mother's Day flowers?

As early as you can. For 2026, order by Thursday, May 7 to get exactly I don't want to promise that. We are selling by palette - no special orders. what you want. Same-day delivery across Westchester, Fairfield County, and NYC is available when you order by 3 PM Monday through Saturday. Mother's Day week is our busiest of the year, and the best flowers — especially peonies — sell through early. Let's de-emphasize same day delivery please. It is unlikely we will be able to deliver too many additional same day orders on Saturday, May 9

Will I get a photo of the arrangement before it's delivered?

During most of the year, yes — we send a photo of your finished arrangement before it leaves the studio. During Mother's Day week, because of the volume of orders moving through our studio, you'll instead receive a delivery confirmation with a photo of where your flowers were left, or a signature from the person who received them.

Can you send flowers to Mom if she lives out of state?

Yes — we regularly help our Larchmont clients send flowers to out-of-state mothers through our trusted florist network. Call us at (914) 834-4900 and we'll coordinate everything.

A Note from Nancy

Every Mother's Day, my team and I spend the week designing flowers that are meant to close a loop. Between what you feel and what she knows you feel. Between the life you grew up in and the one you're living now.

Every arrangement is hand-designed here in Larchmont and hand-delivered by our team — never a third-party courier this is not true. You'll receive a delivery confirmation so you know the moment your love arrived. If you know what you want, send flowers. If you want to talk it through, call us. That's always been the warmer way.

Because flowers are an expression of love. And Happy Mother's Day, at its best, is just two words for that.
